LegalWills.ca or LawDepot? Here's the difference.

LawDepot is a good fit if you need many kinds of legal documents, from Wills to business and real estate forms, under one subscription.

For your Will and the documents that go with it, LegalWills.ca is the better choice for most people. Nothing renews automatically, every document works across Canada in English or French, and the people you trust get help when the time comes.

Where LegalWills.ca comes out ahead

Lower cost over time

You pay once, and nothing renews automatically. Our Premium package with 10 years of updates is $179.90CAD, compared with $958.80 for 10 years of LawDepot's plan.

All of Canada, in English or French

Every document works in all 13 provinces and territories, in English or French. LawDepot's Living Will is not available in Québec or Nunavut.

Room for your family

A separate trust for each child, with payouts in stages, and up to three Executors acting together.

Property in other countries

Expat Wills for Canada, Québec, the US, and the UK that work together. LawDepot's Canadian Will revokes every earlier Will.

Help when the time comes

Keyholders you choose can unlock only the documents and files you pick, after your death. Adding them is free.

Signing, security, and support

E-signing in British Columbia, printing and mailing, two-step sign-in, and a toll-free line answered 24/7.

A free wallet card for everyone you trust

Each Keyholder gets a digital card for Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, or as a PDF. When the time comes, it takes them straight to the documents you chose for them. LawDepot's Estate Vault works differently: anyone you share it with can see everything in it as soon as they accept.

  • A QR code opens the Keyholder sign-in
  • A one-time code sent to their phone confirms it is really them
  • You decide what each Keyholder can see, and when

What it costs over time

LawDepot's plans renew until you cancel, and after you cancel, your documents are view-only. With LegalWills.ca, you pay once: your first year of updates is included, and a membership after that is optional and never renews automatically.

A membership keeps your complete documents printable and your Keyholders' access active. The Will you have signed stays valid whether or not you renew.

  • Will, Power of Attorney, and Living Will$99.95CAD

What LawDepot does well

A fair comparison should say so. LawDepot is a well-established service, and it may be the right one for you.

  • A long track record, with legal documents online since 2001 from its base in Edmonton.
  • One subscription covers more than 200 document types, from Wills to business and real estate forms.
  • A couple can make both of their Wills under one subscription, at no extra charge.
  • Québec documents in French: a Will, a Protection Mandate, and a Power of Attorney.
  • Free-text clauses and an editor for changing a document's wording.
  • For the first year, its estate documents plan, at $95.88, costs less than our Premium package.

When a lawyer or notary is the better choice

If you own a business, have a family member who will need long-term support, are separated, own significant property outside Canada, or have a large or complex estate, a lawyer (or a notary in Québec) can give you advice on your situation that an online Will on its own cannot. Our free questionnaire points you to a professional when that is the better route.

Common questions

Still deciding? These are the questions people ask us most about LawDepot.

A man and a woman looking at a laptop together at home

Over time, yes. For the first year, LawDepot's estate documents plan is $95.88, compared with $99.95CAD for our Will, Power of Attorney, and Living Will package. LawDepot's plans renew every year until you cancel, so over 10 years its plan comes to $958.80; our package with 10 years of updates is $179.90CAD in total.

Not at LegalWills.ca. You pay once, with your first year of updates included, and nothing renews automatically. After that, an optional membership keeps your complete documents printable and your Keyholders' access active (without one, you can still make changes, but only the first page of each document prints); the Will you have signed stays valid whether or not you renew. At LawDepot, printing, downloading, and changing your answers need an active licence or subscription, and after you cancel, your documents are view-only.

Yes. LawDepot's 7-day free trial needs a credit card, and unless you cancel before the week is up, it becomes a subscription at $54 a month plus tax. You are not charged if you cancel during the trial. LegalWills.ca has no subscriptions: you can try it free, and you pay once, only when you are ready to download or print.

Yes. Both prepare a Will made in the presence of witnesses, one of the three forms of Will recognized in Québec, as well as a Protection Mandate and a Power of Attorney. LawDepot's Québec documents are in French; ours are in French or English. Our guide to Wills in Québec explains your options, including when a notary is the better choice.

Keyholders are people you trust, such as your Executor, who can unlock the documents and files you choose after your death. Adding Keyholders is free, and you decide what each one can see and how long they must wait. Each Keyholder can have a free digital wallet card, as a PDF or in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet, with a QR code that takes them straight to the Keyholder sign-in.

Yes. Documents from either service are valid when they are signed and witnessed as the law of your province or territory requires, and both give you signing instructions. LegalWills.ca also takes part in the Law Society of Ontario's Access to Innovation program and the Law Society of British Columbia's Innovation Sandbox.
